![]() ![]() I have a 72 Malibu that was cloned into an SS (along with 9 million others!) before I bought it. The wiring and hardware for a turbo 400 are probably the best clue since the 350 or smaller cars would have had a turbo 350 trans. You should also have either a turbo 400, or heavy duty muncie 4 speed with the larger output shaft (same yolk as a turbo 400), and the fine spline input shaft. Again, I think you probably could have ordered the F41 on a Malibu as well. The front sway bar should also be the larger 1-1/8" (?) diameter. It is known that in 1970 Baltimore coded trim tag style numbers with an even 3rd digit for a V8 and an odd 3rd digit for an L6 so the Fisher Body Style number is a valid resource to tell if the car was a V8 or L6. The 1970 model year is the first year Arlington would assemble Chevelles in this era and marks the return of the Van Nuys, California plant and the demise of the Fremont, California plant that had been assembling Chevelles since 1964. The VIN 136670B198105 decodes to a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu V8. A Malibu would have come with the sweep speedo - unless the gauge backage was ordered, then you got the SS dash. ![]() Vin Number Decoding & General Info The VIN is the Vehicle Identification number. Decoding other cars is similar but don't be surprised if you find an omission here or there. In any case, the "sweep style" speedo is incorrect for an SS. Please note - this site is heavily slanted towards Chevrolet decoding with an emphasis on Camaros. Depending on the plant and year, the Fisher Body Number plate may or may not indicate a V8 or L6 by the Fisher Body style number (such as 13637). As in previous years, actual gauges were optional in the SS, so it may have idiot lights instead. As noted though for 1970 all one can tell from a VIN (such as 136370L123456) is the car was a V8 Malibu built at Van Nuys in this case. One thing that a lot of clones don't have is the "SS Dash" with the 3 round windows. Yes, there is nothing in the VIN to signify an SS or to stipulate engine size - that all came in 72. ![]()
